2013 BAFTA Awards

So tonight is the night for the biggest film awards in Britain the BAFTA Awards ceremony of 2013.  This year has been interesting so far for winners and it is unusually open.  For me the only certain is Daniel Day-Lewis for Best Actor for Lincoln.  Everything else is wide open in my opinion but I have made my predictions and we'll see later tonight if my instincts were right.  My brothers have also made their predictions and I have included them too so you can see out of the three of us who got the most correct.  I will update this post with the winners once they have been announced.  Feel free to add your own predictions or thoughts on the winners (whether deserved or not), speeches and the ceremony itself.

This winners for each category have now been added so please do not read on if you do not yet know who won and do not want to find out.

Review of the Show

I love Stephen Fry.  I should just put that out there as I am totally biased before the show even started.  I think he is one of the most intelligent, charming and witty people and a great host.  He is very funny and so articulate in his monologue at the start of the show which sets it up for a good night.  He is respectful but does not shy away from making fun of the audience members made up of our favourite film industry talent.  Overall I really enjoyed the show and below are some of my best bits.

Standout moments:
  • Paloma Faith trying her best to transform herself into a human Bafta.
  • Ben Afleck rolling his eyes when Bradley Cooper said 'I know I can speak for both of us...'  I guess Ben wasn't so sure he could.
  • Cristoph Waltz calling Quentin Tarantino a silver penned devil.
  • Billy Connoly almost announcing the winner before the nominees.
  • Anne Hathaway telling Eddie Redmayne to feel better 'i'd be holding your hair back but (gestures to the Bafta) come on'.
  • Stephen Fry telling people to be quick with their speeches - 'be swift and you'll be all the more loved for it'
  • Stephen Fry insinuating that there are many closeted gay actors in Hollywood (I know ridiculous right) 'I have a strong feeling I'm not the only actor to come here today with a beard'.
  • Tessa Ross winning the award for Outstanding Contribution to British Cinema.  A great producer and well deserving of the Michael Balcon award.
  • Stephen Fry introducing David Hasstlehoff's replacement George Clooney to introduce Best Supporting Actress.
  • Ben Afleck very sweetly dedicating his award to anyone out there trying to get their second act.
  • Stephen Fry telling Sting to stick that in your tantric pipe and smoke it.
  • Stephen Fry introducing Samuel L. Jackson
  • Samuel L. Jackson.  Enough said.
  • Alan Parker winning the Fellowship Award.
  • Stephen Fry - 'I don't know when I've had such fun.  Certainly not without the use of a water soluble lubricant' - priceless.
