Ted (2012)

Ted is a story about an unpopular little boy, John Bennett (Mark Wahlberg), who wishes for his teddy bear to come to life so he can finally have a friend. The wish comes true and Ted (Seth MacFarlane) and John become best friend's for life. Skip to years later and John is now in a long-term relationship with Lori (Mila Kunis) who just wants him to grow up and stop playing with his teddy bear.  Sounds simple enough right?  Read on to find out my thoughts on Seth MacFarlane's first foray into live action cinema...

Director: Seth MacFarlane
Starring: Mark Wahlberg, Mila Kunis and Seth MacFarlane.
Running Time: 106 Minutes

The film is hilarious and has so many funny scenes it is difficult to remember them all when talking about it afterwards.  The humour is silly and stupid but very funny and there are some surprising cameos from some recognisable faces in small roles.  The narrative is simple and nothing new but it doesn't really matter because the audience were laughing harder from one scene to the next.

Taking centre stage is Mark Wahlberg as the 35-year-old man child who refuses to let go of his childhood.  Wahlberg plays the role well and comes across as believable and sincere with his performance.  At times it does feel like he is just wandering lost around the film but that fits with the character who is being pulled in two directions between loyalty for his best friend and the girlfriend he loves.

Mila Kunis does her best with what she has been given but is in a largely thankless role as most of the funny lines are reserved for John and Ted.  Lori is an accomplished career woman and it is hard to believe she would have put up with John for so many years.  When Lori does attempt a joke regarding celebrity names for beer they criticise her as 'it doesn't work if the name doesn't already have a ski at the end'.  Despite this Kunis does well with what she has and is hilarious in a scene where she has to clean up after Ted and his hookers.

Ted is the one to steal the show though as he gets away saying things that human actors cannot.  Some of the funniest moments of the film are where he is without John in tow and at his job.  Ted keeps failing up at the grocery store and of course is where he meets Tami-Lynn (Jessica Barth) his trailer trash girlfriend.  One of the funniest characters this year so far and brilliantly delivered lines by Seth MacFarlane.

Speaking of MacFarlane this was an impressive live action film directorial debut and hits all the right marks on the humour scale.  As you'd expect from MacFarlane there are a lot of pop culture references and related jokes and cameos.  The film takes an odd turn towards the end with a surprisingly poignant scene which feels a little out of place in a film with so much crass humour.  However, it doesn't take long before we revert back to jokes about disabilities and the MacFarlane style is back.

The other storyline follows a brilliant performance from Giovanni Ribisi as a crazy dad after Ted for his son Robert.  Ribisi is hilarious as Donny and so off-centre he even makes the audience feel uneasy.  So many people pop up in this film in surprising ways and roles which I won't mention here as I don't want to ruin anything but I will say one of the funniest last lines of a film ever.

Final Verdict

Ted is a hilarious film with some great performances and some brilliant cameos.  The plot is a little weak but with so many laugh out loud moments it really doesn't matter.  I highly recommend it.

8/10
